Patrick Hemingway, American Writer, Wildlife Conservationist and Last Surviving Son of Nobel Prize Winner, Ernest Hemingway, 97, has passed
Hemingway, like his late father, was a global citizen and lifelong adventurer
(NEW YORK, NY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2025) – Patrick Hemingway, renowned writer, wildlife conservationist and second son of legendary literary icon Ernest Hemingway, died peacefully on Tuesday evening at his home in Bozeman, Montana.
Mourning the loss of his grandfather, Patrick Hemingway Adams stated: “My grandfather was the real thing: a larger than life paradox from the old world; a consummate dreamer saddled with a scientific brain. He spoke half a dozen languages and solved complicated mathematical problems for fun, but his heart truly belonged to the written and visual arts.”
Patrick Hemingway was born in Kansas City, Missouri on June 28, 1928 and spent his youth in both Cuba and Key West, Florida. Often adventuring with his father on his boat, Pilar, they would engage in spontaneous hunts for German submarines along the Caribbean during World War II. Hemingway attended both Stanford University and Harvard University, the latter becoming his alma mater in 1950 where he received a BA in History and Literature.
Hemingway began his career dedicated to wildlife instruction at the College of African Wildlife Management in Tanzania where he trained the first African rangers for the newly formed country. Moreover, he served as a forestry officer at the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) on behalf of the United Nations.
After the passing of his mother, Pauline Pfeiffer, in 1951 at the age of 23, he channeled his passion for agriculture on his farm in Tanzania, later relocating there with his first wife, Henrietta Broyles. Patrick gained global recognition for his safaris and expeditions, serving as a guide, expert, and honorary game warden in British East Africa.
Patrick’s work managing his father's legacy began in the early 1970s and continued until his passing. His contributions include edits and the completion of his late father’s notable book, True at First Light, where the manuscript is recorded in the Hemingway Archives at the John F. Kennedy Library. He provided historical and literary insight into the Hemingway Library series including Green Hills of Africa, The Sun Also Rises, A Moveable Feast, A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway on Hunting, and Hemingway on War. In 2022, Patrick, alongside his nephews Brendan Hemingway and Stephen Hemingway Adams, compiled decades of letters he exchanged with his father, released as Dear Papa: The Letters of Patrick and Ernest Hemingway.
Responding to Patrick’s preservation of his father’s literary legacy, Angela Hemingway Charles, Founder and President of the Board of Directors for Hemingway Ltd., honored her late brother-in-law: “Patrick’s life was a testament to the values he inherited from his father and made his own: integrity, adventure, and a deep respect for the natural and literary worlds. His passing marks the close of an extraordinary chapter in the Hemingway family, and his legacy will endure through the work he championed and the lives he touched.”
In 2023, Patrick and his second wife, Carol, established the Patrick and Carol T. Hemingway Scholar-in-Residence at the John F. Kennedy Library. Additionally, he was featured in the Library Forum in 2006, where he engaged in a dialogue about his life, the legacy of his famous father, and his contributions to wildlife conservation in Africa.
He’s survived by his daughter, Edwina Hemingway, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews.
Plans for a public celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

rediscover the quiet strength, charm, and cinematic brilliance that defined his era.
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Names Gary Cooper Star of the Month! Every Wednesday night in June, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) showcases 25 of Cooper’s most celebrated films, spanning genres from romantic dramas and wartime epics to screwball comedies and timeless Westerns. Highlights include High Noon and Sergeant York (both Academy Award-winning performances), The Pride of the Yankees, and For Whom
the Bell Tolls. Cooper’s collaborations with Hollywood legends like Audrey Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyck, and Marlene Dietrich will also be spotlighted. A full screening schedule is available at TCM.com.
The first Gary Cooper film festival was celebrated at the newly restored Southampton Playhouse and became the heart of a deeply personal tribute as Maria Cooper Janis, daughter of the legendary actor, hosted the celebration. Featuring IMAX screenings of beloved films like High Noon, Ball of Fire, and The Pride of the Yankees, the weekend was a resonant blend of nostalgia, admiration, and cinematic wonder.
“One can’t put into words the feeling of watching one’s own father up there bigger than life,” shared Janis. “These are the things we not only admire on the Silver Screen, but hope can carry us through our own lives in the real world.”
The festival not only spotlighted Cooper’s performances but also his personal character—his love of nature, his humility with fans, and his quiet integration into the world around him. Book signings and personal remembrances made this historic event a touching tribute that drew long-time admirers and new audiences alike.

A Tribute to Byron Janis Illuminates Maestro’s Legacy in The Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center
NEW YORK, NY — [03/24/25] — Collective 222 presented A Tribute to Byron Janis this evening in The Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, an elegant program of live performances and seldom-seen film that celebrated the breadth of Maestro Janis’s artistry—from his acclaimed Chopin interpretations to original composition for stage and screen. Structured in curated vignettes, the program combined music, spoken tributes, and historic footage to reflect the scope and humanity of Janis’s career.
The evening opened with remarks from Bonnie Barrett, Director of Yamaha Artist Services New York, who introduced Yamaha Artists Peter and Kara Dugan for a luminous reading of Gershwin’s “Embraceable You.” Later in the program, the Dugans returned with “The One World,” an original composition by Byron Janis with lyrics by Sammy Cahn. Written for the 1988 Global Forum of Spiritual and Parliamentary Leaders on Human Survival—a landmark gathering that included the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Carl Sagan, and Al Gore—“The One World” was once performed by John Denver but never commercially recorded, and its message of unity resonated powerfully in the hall.
Honoring Janis’s standing as one of the foremost interpreters of Frédéric Chopin, the program featured Sara Davis Buechner in Chopin’s Waltz in A-flat major, Op. 70, No. 2 and a complementary posthumous prelude in the same key; David Northington in Chopin’s Nocturne in A-flat major, Op. 69, No. 1; and Yamaha Artist Mathis Picard in an improvisational, jazz-oriented interpretation of a Chopin Nocturne, underscoring Janis’s spirit of musical curiosity and cross-pollination. Additional highlights included Bob Cuccioli with Michael Lavine performing “Like Any Man” from Janis’s musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame; Anna Bergman and Josh Rosenbloom in “David’s Star”; and Richard Glazier in Gershwin selections “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Buckle Down Wynsockie,” and “I Got Rhythm.”
Archival moments threaded the program: excerpts from Peter Rosen’s documentary The Byron Janis Story; Byron performing in the round from A Voyage with Frédéric Chopin; a Bell Telephone Hour appearance featuring Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 (III); rehearsal footage with Bob Cuccioli at 42nd Street Studios; Byron & Stefan Janis rehearsing “David’s Star”; and a Times Square vignette with Byron & Maria Cooper Janis. Remarks were also shared regarding Byron’s archives at Yale University. Television journalist and author Chuck Scarborough provided context across vignettes, reflecting on Janis’s transition from the concert stage to composition for musical theater and film.
About Byron Janis
Byron Janis (1928–2024) was a world-renowned American classical pianist celebrated for his virtuosity, individuality, and cultural impact. He made his orchestral debut at age 15 with Toscanini’s NBC Symphony Orchestra, was chosen by Vladimir Horowitz as his first student, became the youngest artist signed to RCA Victor, and gave a celebrated Carnegie Hall debut in 1948. A Cold War–era cultural bridge in the 1960 U.S.–Soviet Union exchange, Janis remained an influential interpreter—especially of Chopin—while composing for Broadway, film, and television even as he confronted debilitating arthritis.
